Today I experienced a strange realization. I returned home giving my Services Marketing Management paper thanks to the university exams of third year Bachelors’ in Management Studies and I started telling my family about it. About the details of it.
However it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to me that they did not understand a word of it. Even when I was expressing my joy about the fact that I stated our family business as my exam matter, they just did not register what I was saying. I then put my bizarre mind to some rest and thinking.
Why are studies in commerce put on such a high pedestal? I had to change my subjects from humanities in high school to management in college because my family strongly felt that I need to know it. Though I admit that it has helped me in becoming a more confident and a smarter person, (thanks to hundred eyeballs starting at you while you present on some nonsensical theory topic)
The statistics in Times of India today just prove my point further. This year 30% graduates from MBA schools of India are jobless compared to 10% internationally. Yet, there continues to be a growing trend of second year college students enrolling for CAT coaching. Most are doing it for the sake of it and some are keeping it as a backup. Most horrifying act is same are doing it because of societal pressures!
MBA today has become an even more monstrous trend among the middle class as it were before in spite of its failure of give cent percent placements to all. As I read on this little news piece today, I wondered about the devastation that the graduates with overfilled eyes of hope must be going through. After all, don’t people do MBA to land those 7-15 lakh pay checks? What when there is no one to offer them those hefty amount?
Moral of the story: To earn money or become something, two years of slogging in a management school in your sturdy youth are not the solution to your problems. You might just be unemployment like thousands of Indians today. Don’t just do MBA or CA just because you want lots of money in life but otherwise have no interest in the field what-so-ever.
Work hard instead. Cultivate a dream. And start living it. Money? That will just follow when you are giving your best to what you love. My guarantee!
